A freelance journalist contributing to multimedia group Digital Video Broadcasting (DVB) on Wednesday was stabbed twice by unidentified assailants in Sittwe township in troubled Rakhine State and remains in unstable condition in hospital, a colleague said.

Ko Kyaw Lin, who writes under the pen name “Yaung Sone” and frequently writes critical articles for DVB news, was attacked at noon by two motorcycle-riding men, said Ko Wunna Khwa Nyo.

He was on his way to downtown from home, when he was attacked by the suspects near Waithali Square at the highway bus terminal, he added.

“He was stabbed twice in the back. At present, he is hospitalised at Sittwe General Hospital,” he said. “He can’t speak yet. He is not in stable condition and he slips in and out of consciousness,” Ko Wunna Khwa Nyo said.

“We can say he is in moderately critical condition. The doctors are taking care of him and doing all things necessary,” he added.

Ko Kyaw Lin was sitting on the back of the motorcycle and his friend was driving when they were attacked.

“Ko Kyaw Lin regularly sends articles to DVB. He is not an in-house reporter. We just learned about his stabbing through online news reports,” an employee at the DVB Yangon office said.

Although the police knew the incident, family members haven’t reported it to the police, so a case has not been opened yet, Ko Wunna Khwa Nyo said.

Police have yet to determine the identity of the attackers or the motive behind the attack.
