Temporary Learning Centre for Done Pyin Village, Sittwe
Done Pyin IDP host village is located in Sittwe township – Rakhine state – Myanmar.
The total population is 2,475 persons, 450 households. One of the main challenges faced by the community in this village is education facilities and teachers availability: the learning space was too small for the 160 students registered from 1st to 4th grade. Consequently, this matter really affect the teaching-learning process.
MA-UK constructed one unit of TLS (Temporary Learning School with facilities and toilet. We used participating and community based approach methodology to include the community in the process. The building was completed in January 2015.
The TLS will be hosting 95 male, 65 female students from 1st to 4th grades.
Our community based approach proved to work. We encouraged and welcomed the community to participate. In the process, we received willing help from them and we were able to empower the community in return. We mainly purchased equipment and construction materials from local or nearby shops/suppliers as well as employing villagers. Working in close collaboration with local community rather than contractors has slightly required more effort, understanding and passion. However, there are a lot of things could be learned from the process such as the local culture, employment mechanism, procurement process and the role of the leaders through the entire construction work. The most important factors from this process is strengthening their feeling of ownership and accountability.
