January 2018, we distributed emergency food aid to 3,000 families in Sittwe IDP camps and villages, partnering with MATW-Project(AU). Emergency pack includes essential food items. For a family of five, each package will provide a month supply of nutritional needs.
Total Families provided: 3,000
Location of distribution
Darpaing, Nga Pone Gyi, Bu May (16), Baw Du Pha(2), Khaung See Yardal, Bay Dar – IDP camps and villages in Sittwe area.
Our community based approach proved to work. We encouraged and welcomed the community to participate. In the process, we received willing help from them and we were able to empower the community in return. We mainly purchased food items from local or nearby shops/suppliers as well as employing IDPs and villagers for distribution process. Working in close collaboration with local community rather than contractors has slightly required more effort, understanding and passion. However, there are a lot of things could be learned from the process such as the local culture, employment mechanism, procurement process and the role of the leaders through the entire logistical work. The most important factors from this process is strengthening their feeling of ownership and accountability.
